Manchester United and Southampton played to a goalless draw in both teams' penultimate Premier League match of the season -- one that had no meaning for either club in terms of end-of-season finish.

Southampton could have been in front in the sixth minute courtesy of an Eric Bailly handball in the United penalty area, but Sergio Romero saved Manolo Gabbiadini's spot attempt to keep the score 0-0.

Wayne Rooney picked out Anthony Martial with an inch-perfect through ball in the 14th minute, but the France international's shot from 18 yards skipped harmlessly past Fraser Forster's far post.

James Ward-Prowse tried his luck from a free kick that forced a reaction from Romero, but the effort from 20 yards curled off target.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was next up for United, with the Armenia international forcing a save from Forster with a right-footed shot from the top of the penalty area in the 20th minute.

With the score still level, Nathan Redmond had a chance from 20 yards just before the interval, but the Southampton midfielder's low, curling shot was collected by Romero to keep the game scoreless at half-time.

Southampton started the second half brightly, with Dusan Tadic stinging Romero's hands from distance before Jack Stephens' free kick did the same minutes later.

A poor United clearance in the 59th minute then fell to Redmond, who squared to Oriel Romeu, but his shot from eight yards was also parried away by Romero.

Some poor defending gifted Rooney the ball in the Southampton area and he laid a nice pass off to Juan Mata, who curled a first-time shot over Forster's goal.

Martial then rattled Forster's post with a beautiful shot from outside the area, but the curling attempt could not find the back of the net as the teams marched on still deadlocked at 0-0.

The game opened up in the final minutes with both sides looking for a winning goal, but neither team could put a blemish on the two keepers' clean sheets as the match ended in a goalless draw.
